INCI name

NITROGEN

Nitrogen

Propellantreviewed

An inert gas used as a propellant.

What it is

Nitrogen is the gas that makes up most of the Earth's atmosphere. It is chemically inert under normal conditions. CosIng lists it as a propellant.

Where it is used

Found in sprays, foams, pressurised containers and bag-on-valve packaging.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

As a propellant it is used to dispense the product and largely escapes from it; its position on the list does not reflect how much remains on skin or hair.

Functions

Propellant
Generating pressure in an aerosol pack, expelling contents when the valve is opened. Some liquefied propellants can act as solvents.
