An unsaturated liquid fatty alcohol.

What it is

Oleyl alcohol is an unsaturated C18 fatty alcohol ((Z)-octadec-9-enol), the alcohol corresponding to oleic acid; it is liquid at room temperature. CosIng lists it as an emollient, fragrance, perfuming, solvent and viscosity controlling ingredient.

Where it is used

Used in creams, lotions, lip products, makeup and hair care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Despite the name, it is a fatty alcohol and not a drying alcohol like ethanol. The INCI name does not reveal whether it is of plant or animal origin.
