A hydrocarbon wax used to structure sticks and balms.

What it is

Ozokerite is a wax consisting mainly of saturated hydrocarbons; the CosIng definition describes a petroleum-derived hydrocarbon wax. CosIng lists it as binding, emulsion stabilising, opacifying and viscosity controlling.

Where it is used

Found in lipsticks, lip balms, mascaras, stick products and creams.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Functions

Binding
Providing adhesive properties during and after compression in cosmetic tablets and/or cakes.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Opacifying
Reducing transparency or translucency of cosmetics.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
