INCI name

PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM

Mineral oil, liquid paraffin

A refined mineral oil that forms an occlusive film.

What it is

Paraffinum liquidum is a highly refined mixture of liquid hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum. It forms a film that reduces water loss from the skin and gives slip; cosmetic grades are purified to pharmaceutical standards.

Where it is used

Found in body lotions, baby oils, creams, cleansing oils, lip care and hair products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Cosmetic mineral oil is a refined grade; discussions about crude or poorly refined oils do not describe the INCI ingredient as such.
