A stearic acid ester of diethylene glycol used as an emulsifier and opacifier.
What it is
PEG-2 stearate is the ester of stearic acid with diethylene glycol (2-(2-hydroxyethoxy)ethyl octadecanoate), corresponding to an average of 2 ethylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as an emulsifying surfactant and opacifying ingredient.
Where it is used
Found in creams, lotions, shampoos and shower gels, including pearlescent formulas.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The stearic acid used commercially is often a mixture with palmitic acid, so the raw material is not a single compound.
