INCI name

PEG-400

PEG-400

A high-molecular polyethylene glycol used as a binder, stabiliser and solvent.

What it is

PEG-400 is a polymer of ethylene oxide (polyethylene glycol) with an average of 400 ethylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as a binding, emulsion-stabilising and solvent ingredient. It is a synthetic ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in creams, lotions, gels, cleansing products and hair care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name PEG-400 does not correspond to the commercial grade called PEG 400, which is named PEG-8 in INCI; the number refers to the average chain length, so the raw material is a mixture.

Functions

Binding
Providing adhesive properties during and after compression in cosmetic tablets and/or cakes.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Solvent
Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
