An ethoxylated coconut-based quaternary ammonium salt used as an antistatic agent.
What it is
PEG-5 cocomonium methosulfate is a quaternary ammonium methyl sulfate in which the nitrogen carries a coconut-derived alkyl chain, a methyl group and polyethylene glycol chains with an average total of 5 ethylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as an antistatic agent.
Where it is used
Found in conditioners, shampoos and other hair care products.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The coconut alkyl chains are a mixture and the number 5 is an average, so the raw material is not a single compound.
Functions
- Antistatic
- Preventing and/or reducing static electricity by neutralising electrical charge on surfaces.
EU regulation
This ingredient is not listed in the annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in the CosIng data.
