INCI name

PEG-55 PROPYLENE GLYCOL OLEATE

PEG-55 propylene glycol oleate

An ethoxylated oleic acid ester used as a thickener in cleansing products.

What it is

PEG-55 Propylene Glycol Oleate is a polyethylene glycol derivative of propylene glycol oleate, with an average of 55 ethylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as a cleansing surfactant and viscosity controlling.

Where it is used

Used mainly in shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps and other surfactant-based cleansers.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The number 55 refers to the average degree of ethoxylation, not to a concentration.

Functions

Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
