INCI name

PEG-7 GLYCERYL COCOATE

PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate

A mild emollient and solubiliser derived from coconut fatty acids.

What it is

PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate is made from glycerides of coconut fatty acids reacted with ethylene oxide. It is water-soluble, adds a light conditioning feel and helps oils disperse in water-based products.

Where it is used

Common in shower gels, shampoos, micellar waters and cleansing oils.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

PEG ingredients are permitted in EU cosmetics; the number refers to the average length of the polyethylene glycol chain.

Functions

Surfactant – emulsifying
Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
