INCI name

PEG-9 POLYDIMETHYLSILOXYETHYL DIMETHICONE

PEG-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone

A PEG-modified branched silicone used as an emulsifier.

What it is

PEG-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone is a branched silicone carrying polyethylene glycol chains with an average of 9 ethylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as an emulsifying surfactant and skin-conditioning agent.

Where it is used

Used in water-in-silicone and water-in-oil creams, foundations, BB creams and sun care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The number 9 refers to the average degree of ethoxylation, so the raw material is a mixture of molecules rather than a single compound.

Functions

Surfactant – emulsifying
Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Skin conditioning
