A silicone polymer modified with polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol chains, used as an emulsifier.
What it is
PEG/PPG-15/15 dimethicone is a dimethicone (silicone) polymer to which polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol chains are attached, which makes it partly water-compatible. Silicones of this kind are often called dimethicone copolyols. CosIng lists it as an anticaking agent and emulsifying surfactant.
Where it is used
Found in a small number of products, such as creams, makeup and hair care products.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The INCI name does not show the molecular weight or the exact structure of the polymer.
Functions
- Anticaking
- Preventing agglomeration of particulate solids into lumps or hard masses (cohesive cake), thus allowing free flow of particles.
- Surfactant – emulsifying
- Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
EU regulation
This ingredient is not listed in the annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in the CosIng data.
