INCI name

PENTYLENE GLYCOL

1,2-Pentanediol

A humectant and solvent that also supports preservation.

What it is

Pentylene glycol (1,2-pentanediol) is a small glycol that binds water and dissolves other ingredients. It can reduce microbial growth, so it is often used alongside or instead of part of a conventional preservative system.

Where it is used

Found in serums, moisturisers, toners and products marketed with alternative preservation.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Products described as preservative-free may still contain glycols such as this one that support preservation.

Functions

Skin conditioning
Maintaining the skin in good condition.
Solvent
Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
