INCI name

PETROLATUM

Petroleum jelly

An occlusive semi-solid made from refined mineral oil.

What it is

Petrolatum is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained by refining petroleum. It forms a film on the skin that slows water loss, which is why it is classed as an occlusive emollient. Cosmetic grades are highly refined.

Where it is used

Found in lip balms, ointments, barrier creams, hand creams and baby care.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

In the EU, petrolatum may be used only if the full refining history is known and the starting material is not carcinogenic (Annex II conditions); see the EU regulation section.
