INCI name

POLYGLYCERYL-2 TETRAISOSTEARATE

Polyglyceryl-2 tetraisostearate

An ester of diglycerin and isostearic acid used as an emollient and emulsion stabiliser.

What it is

Polyglyceryl-2 tetraisostearate is the tetraester of isostearic acid with polyglycerin-2, a glycerol polymer with an average of two glycerol units. CosIng lists it as an emollient, emulsion-stabilising and skin-conditioning ingredient and a cleansing surfactant.

Where it is used

Found in lipsticks, lip balms, cleansing oils, creams and other oil-rich products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The 2 refers to the average number of glycerol units, so the raw material is a mixture of esters.

Functions

Skin conditioning – emollient
Acting as lubricants on the skin surface providing the skin with a soft and smooth appearance.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Skin conditioning
Maintaining the skin in good condition.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
