INCI name

POLYGLYCERYL-3 STEARATE/SEBACATE CROSSPOLYMER

Polyglyceryl-3 stearate/sebacate crosspolymer

A crosslinked polyglycerol polyester with binding, film-forming and thickening functions.

What it is

Polyglyceryl-3 stearate/sebacate crosspolymer is a crosslinked polymer formed by reacting polyglycerin-3 with sebacic acid and stearic acid. CosIng lists it as a binding, emulsion-stabilising, film-forming, viscosity-controlling, non-surfactant dispersing and skin-conditioning ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in makeup, lip products, creams and sun care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal whether the raw materials are of plant or synthetic origin.

Functions

Binding
Providing adhesive properties during and after compression in cosmetic tablets and/or cakes.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
Dispersing (non-surfactant)
Facilitating the dispersion of solids in liquids. They function primarily by coating the solid through the process of adsorption, thus changing the surface characteristic of the suspended solid.
Skin conditioning – miscellaneous
Enhancing the appearance of dry and/or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness.
