INCI name

POLYQUATERNIUM-7

Polyquaternium-7

A conditioning polymer used mainly in hair care and cleansers.

What it is

Polyquaternium-7 is a synthetic copolymer of acrylamide and a quaternary ammonium monomer. Its positive charge lets it attach to negatively charged hair and skin surfaces, leaving a smoother, less static feel.

Where it is used

Common in shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and liquid soaps.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The number in the name is only an identifier for the polymer type, not a strength or concentration.

Functions

Antistatic
Preventing and/or reducing static electricity by neutralising electrical charge on surfaces.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
