INCI name

POLYQUATERNIUM CROSSPOLYMER-3

Polyquaternium crosspolymer-3

A crosslinked cationic polymer, used as a viscosity-controlling ingredient.

What it is

Polyquaternium crosspolymer-3 is, according to CosIng, a polymeric quaternary ammonium compound formed from trimethylaminoethyl methacrylate chloride and PEG-45, crosslinked with methylene bisacrylamide; its quaternary ammonium groups give it a positive charge. CosIng lists it as a viscosity-controlling ingredient.

Where it is used

Appears on the ingredient lists of a small number of products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not show the molecular weight of the polymer or the proportion of each monomer.

Functions

Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
