INCI name

PPG-3 CAPRYLYL ETHER

PPG-3 caprylyl ether

A propoxylated caprylic alcohol used as a solvent and foam booster.

What it is

PPG-3 caprylyl ether is the polypropylene glycol ether of caprylic alcohol (octanol) with an average of three propylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as a foam-boosting surfactant and solvent.

Where it is used

Used in cleansers, shampoos, makeup removers and other rinse-off products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The number 3 refers to the average degree of propoxylation, so the raw material is a mixture of molecules with different chain lengths.

Functions

Surfactant – foam boosting
Increasing foaming capacity and/or stabilize foams in general.
Solvent
Dissolving other components of cosmetics. Solvents are usually liquids (aqueous and nonaqueous).
