INCI name

PPG-5-CETETH-20

PPG-5-ceteth-20

An alkoxylated cetyl alcohol used as an emulsifier and solubiliser.

What it is

PPG-5-ceteth-20 is cetyl alcohol reacted with propylene oxide and ethylene oxide (on average 5 and 20 units respectively). CosIng lists it as emulsifying and cleansing.

Where it is used

Found in toners, micellar waters, cleansers, hair care and products where fragrance or oils need to be dispersed in water.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The numbers in the name give the average degree of alkoxylation, not the amount used.

Functions

Surfactant – emulsifying
Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
