A complex quaternary ammonium salt used as a conditioning ingredient.
What it is
Quaternium-98 is a complex quaternary ammonium salt prepared by reacting an ethoxylated lauryl propylenediamine (23 mol ethylene oxide) with lauric acid, followed by quaternisation with dimethyl sulfate. CosIng lists it as an emollient and as a hair- and skin-conditioning ingredient.
Where it is used
Found in hair conditioners, hair masks and other hair care products.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The number 23 refers to the average degree of ethoxylation, so the raw material is a mixture of molecules.
