INCI name

RAYON

Rayon (viscose)

Regenerated cellulose fibre used as a bulking and viscosity-controlling ingredient.

What it is

Rayon is regenerated cellulose made by the viscose process: cellulose is treated with caustic soda and carbon disulfide, dissolved in a dilute alkali and extruded into an acid to form a continuous fibre. CosIng lists it as a bulking and viscosity-controlling ingredient.

Where it is used

Found mainly in mascaras containing fibres and in some other makeup products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not show the length or thickness of the fibres.

Functions

Bulking
Non-reactive (chemically inert), solid ingredients that dilute other solids and/or increase the volume of cosmetic products.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
