INCI name

SODIUM ACRYLATE/SODIUM ACRYLOYLDIMETHYL TAURATE COPOLYMER

Sodium acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer

A synthetic polymer used to thicken and stabilise formulas.

What it is

This is a synthetic copolymer of sodium acrylate and sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate. CosIng lists it as an anticaking agent, emulsion stabiliser, film former, opacifier and viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Found in creams, gel-creams, serums, lotions and sun care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

In formulas it is often supplied pre-dispersed with oils and emulsifiers, which then appear separately on the list.

Functions

Anticaking
Preventing agglomeration of particulate solids into lumps or hard masses (cohesive cake), thus allowing free flow of particles.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Opacifying
Reducing transparency or translucency of cosmetics.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
