INCI name

SODIUM C14-16 OLEFIN SULFONATE

Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate

A foaming anionic surfactant.

What it is

Sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate is an anionic surfactant made from olefins. It cleanses and foams and is often used in sulfate-free claims because it is not a sulfate.

Where it is used

Found in shampoos, shower gels and facial cleansers.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

'Sulfate-free' products may still contain strong surfactants such as sulfonates.
