INCI name

SODIUM CARBOMER

Sodium carbomer

A pre-neutralised carbomer used to thicken gels.

What it is

Sodium carbomer is the sodium salt of carbomer, a cross-linked polymer of acrylic acid. CosIng lists it as emulsion stabilising, film forming, gel forming and viscosity controlling.

Where it is used

Found in gels, serums, creams, lotions and hand sanitiser gels.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal the polymer grade, which affects texture.

Functions

Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Gel forming
Giving the consistency of a gel (a semi-solid preparation with some elasticity) to a liquid preparation.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
