INCI name

SODIUM CARBOXYMETHYL STARCH

Sodium carboxymethyl starch

A modified starch used as a binder, film former and thickener.

What it is

Sodium carboxymethyl starch is the sodium salt of the carboxymethyl ether of starch. CosIng lists it as a binding, emulsion-stabilising, film-forming and viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Found in creams, gels, masks and hair care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal the starch source or the degree of substitution.
