INCI name

SODIUM CARRAGEENAN

Sodium carrageenan

The sodium salt of carrageenan, a seaweed polysaccharide used as a thickener and film former.

What it is

Sodium carrageenan is the sodium salt of carrageenan, a polysaccharide obtained from red seaweeds. CosIng lists it as an antistatic, binding, emulsion-stabilising, film-forming and viscosity-controlling ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in gels, creams, toothpastes, masks and hair styling products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The label does not show the concentration used or the type of carrageenan.

Functions

Antistatic
Preventing and/or reducing static electricity by neutralising electrical charge on surfaces.
Binding
Providing adhesive properties during and after compression in cosmetic tablets and/or cakes.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
