INCI name

SODIUM CHLORIDE

Salt

Table salt, used mainly to thicken surfactant-based cleansers.

What it is

Sodium chloride is ordinary salt. In shampoos and shower gels based on sulfate-type surfactants it raises viscosity, so the product does not run off the hand.

Where it is used

Common in shampoos, body washes and bath salts; also present in small amounts as a by-product of other raw materials.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Salt in a cleanser is a formulation aid; its position on the list says little about how the product feels on skin or hair.

Functions

Bulking
Non-reactive (chemically inert), solid ingredients that dilute other solids and/or increase the volume of cosmetic products.
Fragrance
Imparting an odour or taste. Creating a perceivable pleasant smell and/or masking a bad smell.
Oral care
Providing cosmetic effects to the oral cavity, e.g. cleansing, deodorising, protecting.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
