INCI name

SODIUM COCOA BUTTERATE

Sodium cocoa butterate

A sodium soap made from cocoa butter fatty acids.

What it is

Sodium cocoa butterate is the sodium salt of the fatty acids derived from cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao seed butter), in other words a soap. CosIng lists it as a cleansing agent and cleansing surfactant.

Where it is used

Found mainly in bar soaps and other solid cleansing products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

On soap labels this name usually indicates that cocoa butter was saponified during manufacture; the label does not show how much.

Functions

Cleansing
Helping to keep the body surface clean.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
