INCI name

SODIUM COCOYL AMINO ACIDS

Sodium cocoyl amino acids

A coconut-based amino acid surfactant used in cleansing products.

What it is

Sodium cocoyl amino acids is the sodium salt of the products formed by reacting coconut fatty acid chlorides with protein hydrolysates, so that coconut-derived acyl chains are attached to amino acids. It is an anionic surfactant. CosIng lists it as an antistatic and cleansing agent and a cleansing surfactant.

Where it is used

Found in facial cleansers, shampoos, shower gels and other rinse-off products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not show the source of the protein hydrolysate or the exact amino acid composition.

Functions

Antistatic
Preventing and/or reducing static electricity by neutralising electrical charge on surfaces.
Cleansing
Helping to keep the body surface clean.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
