INCI name

SODIUM COCOYL ISETHIONATE

Sodium cocoyl isethionate

A mild surfactant common in solid cleansing bars.

What it is

Sodium cocoyl isethionate is a surfactant made from coconut fatty acids. It gives a creamy foam and is the main ingredient of many syndet bars.

Where it is used

Found in cleansing bars, solid shampoos, face washes and body washes.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

A bar labelled 'soap-free' usually relies on synthetic surfactants such as this one.
