INCI name

SODIUM GLYCOLATE

Sodium glycolate

Bufferingreviewed

The sodium salt of glycolic acid, used for buffering.

What it is

Sodium glycolate is the monosodium salt of glycolic acid. CosIng lists it as a buffering agent, used to set and hold the pH of a formula.

Where it is used

Used in exfoliating products, toners, creams and cleansers, often together with glycolic acid.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Its presence alongside glycolic acid does not reveal the pH of the product or how much free acid it contains.

Functions

Buffering
Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
