INCI name

SODIUM HYDROXYPROPYL STARCH PHOSPHATE

Sodium hydroxypropyl starch phosphate

A modified starch used to thicken formulas and add bulk.

What it is

Sodium hydroxypropyl starch phosphate is a chemically modified starch (a hydroxypropyl ether of starch phosphate, as the sodium salt). CosIng lists it as an abrasive, bulking and viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Used in creams, lotions, gels, masks, sun care products and makeup.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not reveal the plant source of the starch.

Functions

Abrasive
Removing unwanted tissue or foreign materials from various body surfaces, including mechanical tooth cleaning and/or gloss improvement.
Bulking
Non-reactive (chemically inert), solid ingredients that dilute other solids and/or increase the volume of cosmetic products.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
