INCI name

SODIUM LACTATE

Sodium lactate

The sodium salt of lactic acid, used as a humectant and buffer.

What it is

Sodium lactate is the salt of lactic acid. It attracts water and, together with lactic acid, helps hold a formula at a set pH.

Where it is used

Found in moisturisers, cleansers and soaps.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

In combination with lactic acid it often acts as a buffer rather than as an exfoliant.
