INCI name

SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE

SLS

A strong foaming anionic surfactant.

What it is

Sodium lauryl sulfate is an anionic surfactant made from lauryl alcohol. It cleans effectively and produces rich foam.

Where it is used

Found in toothpastes, shampoos, shower gels and soaps.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is a different ingredient from sodium laureth sulfate (SLES); how harsh a cleanser feels depends on the whole surfactant system and concentration.

Functions

Cleansing
Helping to keep the body surface clean.
Denaturant
Rendering cosmetics unpalatable. Mostly added to cosmetics containing ethyl alcohol to make it unsuitable for ingestion.
Foaming
Traping numerous small bubbles of air or other gas within a small volume of liquid by modifying the surface tension of the liquid.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
