INCI name

SODIUM PEG-7 OLIVE OIL CARBOXYLATE

Sodium PEG-7 olive oil carboxylate

An anionic olive oil-based surfactant used as an emulsifier and foam booster.

What it is

Sodium PEG-7 olive oil carboxylate is the sodium salt of a carboxylated polyethylene glycol ether of olive oil fatty acids, with an average of 7 ethylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as an emulsifying, foam-boosting and hydrotrope surfactant.

Where it is used

Found in shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansers and other mild cleansers.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The number 7 is an average, so the raw material is a mixture of molecules of different sizes.

Functions

Surfactant – emulsifying
Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
Surfactant – foam boosting
Increasing foaming capacity and/or stabilize foams in general.
Surfactant – hydrotrope
Enhancing the water solubility of another surfactant.
