INCI name

SODIUM POLYACRYLATE STARCH

Sodium polyacrylate starch

Starch grafted with sodium polyacrylate.

What it is

Sodium polyacrylate starch is a graft polymer of starch and sodium polyacrylate. CosIng lists it as an absorbent, binding agent, emulsion stabiliser, film former and viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Found in creams, gels, masks and makeup.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is a starch modified with a synthetic polymer, not a native starch.

Functions

Absorbent
Taking up water- and/or oil-soluble (dissolved or finely dispersed) substances.
Binding
Providing adhesive properties during and after compression in cosmetic tablets and/or cakes.
Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
