INCI name

SODIUM POLYACRYLOYLDIMETHYL TAURATE

Sodium polyacryloyldimethyl taurate

A synthetic polymer used as a thickener and emulsion stabiliser.

What it is

Sodium polyacryloyldimethyl taurate is a homopolymer of the sodium salt of acryloyldimethyltaurate (2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid). CosIng lists it as an emulsion-stabilising and viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Found in creams, gels, serums and sun care products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is often supplied as a pre-mix with oils and emulsifiers that are listed separately on the label.

Functions

Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
