INCI name

SODIUM POLYNAPHTHALENESULFONATE

Sodium polynaphthalenesulfonate

A synthetic polymeric surfactant and dispersant.

What it is

Sodium Polynaphthalenesulfonate is the sodium salt of a polymer of naphthalenesulfonic acid condensed with formaldehyde. CosIng lists it for emulsion stabilising, gel forming, as a hydrotrope and as a cleansing surfactant.

Where it is used

Appears in a limited number of products, such as cleansers, emulsions and products containing dispersed pigments or particles.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI list alone does not show which of its listed functions it serves in a particular formula.

Functions

Emulsion stabilising
Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
Gel forming
Giving the consistency of a gel (a semi-solid preparation with some elasticity) to a liquid preparation.
Surfactant – hydrotrope
Enhancing the water solubility of another surfactant.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
