INCI name

SODIUM SILICATE

Sodium silicate

An inorganic salt used as a buffer and corrosion inhibitor.

What it is

Sodium silicate is the sodium salt of silicic acid, an alkaline inorganic compound. CosIng lists it as anticorrosive and buffering.

Where it is used

Found in hair colouring and bleaching products, soaps and some cleansers and toothpastes.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Its role is technical (pH control, protecting packaging from corrosion); the label does not show how much is used.

Functions

Anticorrosive
Preventing and or inhibiting the corrosion of the packaging material.
Buffering
Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
