A soap made from tallow, an animal fat.
What it is
Sodium tallowate is the sodium salt of the fatty acids of tallow, an animal fat. CosIng lists it as cleansing, emulsifying, foam boosting, cleansing surfactant and viscosity controlling.
Where it is used
Found mainly in bar soaps, often together with soaps made from coconut or palm kernel oil.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
It is of animal origin, which matters for vegan products.
Functions

- Helping to keep the body surface clean.
- Surfactant – emulsifying
- Helping suspensions or dispersions of liquids in a second liquid by reducing the surface tension of the substances to be emulsified.
- Surfactant – foam boosting
- Increasing foaming capacity and/or stabilize foams in general.
