An unsaturated hydrocarbon used as an emollient.

What it is

Squalene is an unsaturated branched hydrocarbon (an isoprenoid) found in fish oils, especially shark liver oil, and in plant oils such as olive oil. CosIng lists it as an emollient, hair-conditioning agent and solvent.

Where it is used

Used in creams, facial oils, serums, lip care and hair products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Squalene is not the same as squalane, its saturated (hydrogenated) form. The INCI name does not reveal whether it comes from a plant or an animal source.
