INCI name

STEARYL DIMETHICONE

Stearyl dimethicone

A silicone with stearyl chains used as an emollient.

What it is

Stearyl dimethicone is a dimethicone (polydimethylsiloxane) in which some methyl groups are replaced by stearyl (C18) chains, which gives it a more wax-like character. CosIng lists it as an emollient and skin-conditioning agent.

Where it is used

Used in creams, lotions, lip products, makeup and antiperspirants.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name does not show the chain length of the silicone or the number of stearyl groups, which affect its texture.
