INCI name

SYNTHETIC FLUORPHLOGOPITE

Synthetic mica

A lab-made mica used for shimmer and slip in make-up.

What it is

Synthetic fluorphlogopite is a synthetic mineral with a mica-like layered structure. It is often coated with pigments such as titanium dioxide or iron oxides to create pearlescent effects, and it improves the feel of powders.

Where it is used

Found in eyeshadows, highlighters, powders, nail polishes and shimmering body products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

It is often chosen as an alternative to natural mica, whose sourcing has raised labour concerns.

Functions

Bulking
Non-reactive (chemically inert), solid ingredients that dilute other solids and/or increase the volume of cosmetic products.
