INCI name

TRIDECETH-2 CARBOXAMIDE MEA

Trideceth-2 carboxamide MEA

An ethoxylated amide used as a foam booster and thickener.

What it is

Trideceth-2 carboxamide MEA is an ethoxylated tridecyl ether bearing a carboxamide group linked to monoethanolamine, with an average of two ethylene oxide units. CosIng lists it as a foam-boosting and cleansing surfactant and a viscosity-controlling agent.

Where it is used

Found in shampoos, shower gels and other foaming cleansers.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The number 2 refers to the average degree of ethoxylation, so the raw material is a mixture of molecules.

Functions

Surfactant – foam boosting
Increasing foaming capacity and/or stabilize foams in general.
Surfactant – cleansing
Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
