A glycol made of three propylene glycol units, used as a humectant and emulsion stabiliser.
What it is
Tripropylene glycol is an oligomer formed from three propylene glycol units linked by ether bonds, a colourless, slightly viscous liquid. CosIng lists it as an antioxidant, emulsion-stabilising and humectant ingredient.
Where it is used
Found in fragrances, hair care products, creams and other products.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The commercial material is a mixture of isomers rather than a single compound.
Functions
- Antioxidant
- Inhibiting reactions promoted by oxygen, thus avoiding oxidation and rancidity.
- Emulsion stabilising
- Helping the process of emulsification and improving emulsion stability and shelf-life.
- Humectant
- Retaining and/or preserving the moisture in a product during use.
EU regulation
This ingredient is not listed in the annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in the CosIng data.
