The trisodium salt of sulfosuccinic acid, used as a buffering, chelating and hydrotrope ingredient.
What it is
Trisodium sulfosuccinate is the trisodium salt of sulfosuccinic acid, succinic acid carrying a sulfonic acid group. CosIng lists it as a buffering, chelating, hydrotrope and cleansing surfactant ingredient.
Where it is used
Found in a small number of products, such as cleansers.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
The label does not show the concentration actually used.
Functions
- Buffering
- Stabilising the pH of an aqueous medium in a narrow range even if an acid or base is added. Altering and/or maintaining a cosmetic product's pH at the desired level.
- Chelating
- Forming complexes with metal ions which could affect the stability and/or appearance of cosmetics.
- Surfactant – hydrotrope
- Enhancing the water solubility of another surfactant.
- Surfactant – cleansing
- Wetting body surfaces, emulsifying or solubilizing oils, and suspending soil (generally, such ingredients contribute to the foaming and lathering properties of cleansing products).
EU regulation
This ingredient is not listed in the annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 in the CosIng data.
