A volatile terpene-rich fraction from pine trees, used as a fragrance ingredient and regulated in Annex III.
What it is
Turpentine is a mixture of volatile, mainly terpenic hydrocarbons obtained from various pine species (Pinus) by distillation of the resin or as a by-product of processing softwood. CosIng lists it as a perfuming ingredient. In the EU it is covered by an entry in Annex III (substances subject to restrictions).
Where it is used
Found in a small number of scented products, such as body care and massage products.
Limits of interpretation
The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.
See the EU regulation section for the applicable limits and conditions. As a natural material, its composition can vary between batches.
