INCI name

VP/HEXADECENE COPOLYMER

VP/hexadecene copolymer

A synthetic film-forming polymer.

What it is

VP/hexadecene copolymer is a synthetic polymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) and hexadecene. CosIng lists it as a binder, film former, hair-fixing agent, viscosity-controlling agent and non-surfactant dispersing agent.

Where it is used

Used in sun care products, mascaras, lipsticks, foundations and hair styling products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

Functions

Binding
Providing adhesive properties during and after compression in cosmetic tablets and/or cakes.
Film forming
Producing (upon application) a continuous film on the skin, hair or nails.
Hair fixing
Permitting physical control of hair style.
Viscosity controlling
Increasing or decreasing the viscosity (thickness) of cosmetics.
Dispersing (non-surfactant)
Facilitating the dispersion of solids in liquids. They function primarily by coating the solid through the process of adsorption, thus changing the surface characteristic of the suspended solid.
