INCI name

ZEOLITE

Zeolite

A crystalline aluminosilicate mineral used as an absorbent, deodorant and bulking agent.

What it is

Zeolite is the name for crystalline aluminosilicates made of silica and alumina in various proportions plus metal oxides, with a porous structure. According to CosIng they are produced by hydrothermal treatment of aluminosilicates, or occur naturally. CosIng lists it as an absorbent, anti-caking, bulking and deodorant ingredient.

Where it is used

Found in deodorants, powders, masks and other products.

Limits of interpretation

The INCI list shows which ingredients are present, not how much of each. Above 1%, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight; below 1% the order is free.

The INCI name covers different types of zeolite with different crystal structures and cations; it does not show which type is used or whether it is natural or synthetic.

Functions

Absorbent
Taking up water- and/or oil-soluble (dissolved or finely dispersed) substances.
Anticaking
Preventing agglomeration of particulate solids into lumps or hard masses (cohesive cake), thus allowing free flow of particles.
Bulking
Non-reactive (chemically inert), solid ingredients that dilute other solids and/or increase the volume of cosmetic products.
Deodorant
Reducing and/or eluminating unpleasant odour. Contributing against the formation of malodour on body surfaces.
