About Hawaiian Tropic
Hawaiian Tropic is a sun care brand founded in 1969 by Ron Rice, a former chemistry teacher, with a US$500 loan from his father. Playtex bought the brand in 2007 for US$83 million, and it is now owned by Edgewell Personal Care. The brand is known for suntan lotions with a signature coconut scent.
Tropical extracts in the top five
The 9 Hawaiian Tropic products in INCIMondo are sun care. Their most frequent ingredients after water are botanical extracts that echo the brand's tropical image – PLUMERIA ACUTIFOLIA FLOWER EXTRACT (frangipani), PASSIFLORA INCARNATA FRUIT EXTRACT (passion flower), MANGIFERA INDICA FRUIT EXTRACT and PSIDIUM GUAJAVA FRUIT EXTRACT – with TOCOPHERYL ACETATE in fourth place.
All 9 formulas contain fragrance ingredients, fitting for a brand known for its signature coconut scent. Denatured alcohol (ALCOHOL DENAT.) appears in 5, silicones in 3 and parabens in 1.
Extracts versus UV filters
Extracts may top the frequency ranking, but a sunscreen's protection level is shown by its SPF and, in the EU, often a UVA logo; the UV filters themselves appear in the list under INCI names such as BUTYL METHOXYDIBENZOYLMETHANE.
